Mount Shasta Sunset Photo | California Fine Art Photography

If you’re planning to explore Mount Shasta, this viewpoint is one of the best. It’s a great, relatively short hike, accessible with a bit of effort, and offers excellent views as a reward.

This past spring we had the pleasure of driving all the way through California, from the southern end, up to Oregon. Of course we experienced a huge variety of landscapes and climates, but none left a mark on us quite as much as Northern California.

Well, okay, maybe Yosemite - but that's a different story.

While in the Mount Shasta area, we set aside an evening for a hike to Heart Lake, hoping to catch one of the most stunning Mount Shasta viewpoints at sunset. Long story short: we did. And it was amazing. Highly recommended.

The short one mile climb up from Castle Lake has some pretty stunning views.

But the real reward is making it to the top, where the peak comes into full view from the banks of Heart Lake.

We were lucky enough to get the place almost entirely to ourselves that night. Some backpackers had set up camp nearby, which made us immediately regret being there on a short photo mission, rather than an overnight trip. Next time.

On a calm day, the water captures a gorgeous reflection of Mt. Shasta. We had to work around some gusty winds, but all the same, as the sun crept lower and the sky lit up full of color, so did the lake.

Warm orange tones were caught in the clouds, and the snow-capped peak mountain started to glow a beautiful mix of pink and purple - a classic sunset any artist would be thrilled to capture. And for us, it was a night to remember.

This shot of Mt. Shasta quickly found its way into our wall art print collection. If you'd like to purchase one for yourself, or as a gift, it's available in our print shop.

All of our photos are printed on Kodak Professional Endura photo paper, which has a lustre finish. It's halfway between glossy and matte, to produce an image with accurate colors and sharp details. Each print is a unique, quality piece of artwork, and arrives ready for you to frame and hang on the wall.
