Six Tips for Amazing Senior Photos

June 8, 2021

There’s plenty of careful planning that goes into any high school senior photo session. How do you make sure that everything goes well on the big day and you walk away with fantastic photos that you’ll cherish forever? We’ve got six tips that will help you in every step of the process, from prepping for your session and choosing a photographer, to what happens after you get your photos.

1. Uncover your style

When you’re wearing X, you feel the most like you. What’s the X? Jeans and a tee, a boho chic dress, a bow tie, a leather jacket? Choose outfits that you absolutely love and are completely comfortable wearing. If you feel good, you’ll look good!

2. Find a photographer that fits your personal tastes

Use Pinterest or Instagram to search for photographers in your area. Look through their photos of clients and, better yet, hop on over to their website. Ask for full gallery examples if you like! This is the time to decide on your vibe.. candid vs. posed. Color vs. black and white. Outdoors in nature vs. indoors in a studio. Bright and airy vs. dark and edgy. Lifestyle vs. high fashion.

3. Carefully choose your location

If you took the first two steps to heart, this one is cake. A skilled photographer will help you make the best location choice. And they’ll base it on your vibe. A versatile location is one that provides a central place to start, with several background options. Urban environments, for example, could include a park with trees and beautiful landscapes, historic brick buildings, modern concrete structures, and even a skyline. A well chosen natural setting might have a creek, open meadows, and a rustic barn all within walking distance.

4. Go into your shoot with a positive attitude

Something is bound to go a little haywire - it’s a big day! Maybe your hair won’t lay right or a button fell off your shirt. Don’t sweat it! Easier said than done, but forget about it. Just have fun. Smile and laugh through any mess-ups, awkward moments, nervousness, or silly instructions from your photographer. Your ability to simply enjoy the day will definitely come through on camera.

5. Order prints

If you’ve had professional photos taken, you should show them off. In our modern, digital age it’s easy to review your gallery online, save a few downloads to share on social media and move on. Your senior photos are meant to capture a milestone - one that you and family will want to look back on. These photos are going to be sharp enough and large enough to make a gorgeous gallery wall - something your cell phone just can’t do. Canvases and modern, minimal frames are ‘in’.

6. Share your experience

You spent a ton of time searching, so share your experience by reviewing your photographer. It will help someone else decide if that photographer is a good fit for their tastes and style. Especially if you had an awesome time and loved your photos, leaving a review is a great way to help your photographer find new clients - they will be seriously grateful for it!
